Fresh into her new role as Technical Policy Manager, Caroline Harrison MICFor attended the launch of the Future of Timber platform developed by Evolving Forests. Funded by Built by Nature, Scottish Forestry Trust, Forestry Commission and Egger, this is the result of a year of conversations filmed, recorded and brought together in an intriguing and beautifully visual way. What is the Future of Timber? A question asked to a multitude of people from across the supply chain and across Europe. Influencers, innovators, entrepreneurs and just downright passionate woody folk.
The platform looks at radical realism, bioregionalism, responsibility, species and investment in an inspiring and challenging way. The launch culminated in a panel discussion with Kate Davies from Hooke Park, Paul Orsi FICFor from Sylva Foundation, Tom Bedford from UK Hardwoods and James Solly from Format Engineers. The panel fielded searching questions from the floor of delegates from foresters, architects, makers and students. It was refreshing to hear and see connections being made between the growers, managers and users of timber but there were also real gaps in knowledge from across the gathered attendees too. This platform has already started conversations that will help increase the understanding around forestry, timber and the built environment and the professions that inhabit these sectors, and we are interested to see where it will go.
