Helping shape a more constructive approach to engagement in forestry

The Institute is proud to have contributed to the development of the new document Guidelines for Respectful and Constructive Engagement in Forestry Management (Scotland), published by Confor. These guidelines were developed collaboratively with partners from across the forestry sector, including Scottish Forestry, Forestry and Land Scotland, Scottish Woodlands, Tilhill Forestry and the Scottish Land Commission.

Why did we get involved?

As the UK’s professional body for forestry and arboriculture, we know that sustainable forest management depends not only on good technical practice, but also on effective relationships. Forest management decisions often involve a wide range of stakeholders, communities and land interests. When engagement is carried out well, it can improve outcomes, build trust, identify issues early and support better long-term decision-making. These guidelines establish clear expectations around respectful and constructive engagement, outlining both what stakeholders can expect from forestry organisations and how concerns can be addressed where issues are raised. They are intended to complement existing guidance and support a positive culture across the sector.

What does this mean for our members?

For ICF members, the guidelines provide a valuable framework for professional practice. They reinforce the importance of transparency, proportionate engagement, and respectful dialogue, while helping forestry professionals navigate increasingly complex stakeholder environments. They also provide greater clarity about standards of behaviour and processes that support constructive conversations, even where views differ.

By working together, we can continue to strengthen confidence in forestry, support good decision-making and ensure that engagement remains at the heart of sustainable forest management.
